Silver Springs Farm Garlic Project began in 1997 as a fundraiser for the Ottawa Carleton Association for Persons with Developmental Disabilities. Money raised from this project goes towards holiday gifts for OCAPDD individuals, many of whom have no families, special services, special classes and many other needed items. The Garlic Project is run entirely by volunteers. Each year volunteers plant between 35,00 to 40,000 garlic bulbs. They are then covered for the winter. Between the months of April and July volunteers are needed to weed the rows of garlic so that the garlic plant is not choked and can grow to its full potential. Towards the end of July the garlic is picked, and again many volunteers are required to clean, sort, braid and get things ready for the sale the first week in August. Volunteers are needed to cover the garlic fields with hay int he last week in November. ON the job training/assistance is provided!!

How will this opportunity benefit the volunteer?
If you love gardening, and want to learn something new, this could be the project for you. Learn all about planting, caring for, and harvesting garlic. What it takes to get it to market! There is something for everyone. This can be done by yourself or in a group. Become part of a team to get a project completed and the satisfaction of helping out a non profit organization. This is a great team building activity for groups or family outing with a purpose.
How will the organization benefit?
Our Silver Springs Garlic Project is run primarily by volunteers. Many, many volunteers are needed to make everything happen. Money raised by the Garlic Project goes directly to helping the individuals we support.
