Boxing 4 Health Inc (B4H) offers fitness inspired boxing classes to people with Parkinson’s disease as well as seniors. Our volunteers are invaluable in assisting the instructors and students during class at all times.

Classes are not designed to provide the volunteer a boxing workout, but for the volunteer to gain knowledge and experience assisting people with Parkinson’s disease. Volunteers are not required to have boxing experience, but a caring attitude and an encouraging and outgoing demeanor will take them a long way.

Volunteers will be assigned to classes as needed so it is very important for volunteers to notify B4H when they are unable to participate during their assigned class.

Gym Responsibilities
• Arrive 15 minutes prior to class to help Instructors and PD Fighters prepare for class.
• Check in with Instructors to identify any special needs during class, which may include:
– Explaining and demonstrating modifications for exercises
– Making sure PD Fighters are staying properly hydrated
– Watching for signs of low blood pressure, dizziness, overheating
– Being compassionate and fully present during class
– Being a good listener
– Keep a firm “tough love” attitude at the same time,
– FUN – help keep the morale of classes positive.
– Assist PD Fighters in wrapping hands prior to class.
– Assist PD Fighters with putting on boxing gloves during class.
– Assist PD Fighters who need assistance with balance and/or getting up and down off the floor (but always encourage and teach independent techniques first)

Volunteers are expected to assist with set-up, take-down, and cleaning of equipment:
– Disinfect all heavy bags and speed bags (as needed)
– Put equipment away (as needed)
– Sanitize boxing gloves (as needed)
– Look for “Lost and Found” items in gym and Lounge area (as needed)
– Check and re-fill water containers at the hand washing station (as needed)
– Any other volunteer duties as assigned.

We are specifically looking for people for the following volunteer slots:
Mondays/Wednesdays/Fridays at 10:00 am and or 11:30 am at Headquarters
(1796 Woodward Drive – Maitland & 417)

Mondays/Wednesdays/Fridays at 10:00 am and or 11:30 am in the East End
(813 Shefford Drive inside Sensplex East)

How will this opportunity benefit the volunteer?
Volunteers receive a 50-minute training video, training on gym floor, feedback and encouragement. Volunteers are invited to the annual orientation workshops to learn more about exercise and education regarding Parkinson’s Disease. Volunteers are invited to our monthly webinars for members. Each month we have a different speaker offering a wealth of relevant information and this could be very educational for anyone interested in working in health care, with seniors and/or people with disabilities, etc. Our community of fighters are an inspirational group, fighting back against PD on a daily basis. Their commitment is amazing and volunteers walk away with a strong feeling of being able to make a difference.
How will the organization benefit?
We depend on our volunteers to round out the support for our fighters. Some need a volunteer to check their balance, some just need a volunteer to model the instructor actions and some simply need a cheerleader. In some of our classes, you might assist with a particular exercise rather than with a particular student.
Volunteer location:
We have an urgent need of a volunteer at our East End location: Mondays, Wednesdays or Fridays at 10am & 11:30 813 Shefford Rd., inside Titan Performance (East End) Alternate locations: 1002 Beaverbrook Rd (Kanata) 1796 Woodward Drive (Nepean)
