A Birth Companion is a mature individual who identifies as female, is over the age of 18, and has an interest and/or experience with perinatal wellbeing and at-risk populations. The volunteer commits to providing either in person and/or virtual support to pregnant people during the last trimester of pregnancy, during their labour & delivery and up to 6 weeks postpartum. Our goal is to help families prepare mentally, physically and emotionally for the birth of their baby, connect with community resources and support services and increase self-awareness and confidence in their parenting skills. All applicants must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 and successfully pass an interview before being invited to join the 20hr training to become a Birth Companion.
How will this opportunity benefit the volunteer?
The volunteer will gain extensive training in perinatal health and wellbeing. They will be given professional development opportunities, and have the pleasure of connecting with many different people, from a vast array of backgrounds. Supporting someone through pregnancy, delivery and the postpartum journey is often life changing for both the family receiving the support and the volunteer. It is an incredibly unique volunteer role. Volunteers receive consistent support from well trained staff throughout the match.
How will the organization benefit?
Mothercraft is a non-for-profit organization. This much needed service is free for families accessing the Birth Companion Program. We rely on the generosity and commitment of our volunteers to provide the one on one prenatal, labour/delivery and postpartum support to at risk families in our community.
